The Tale of Genji is a classic work in the early 11th century recounting the life of Genji, the son of the emperor and a low-ranking concubine. Genji falls in love with his stepmother, an emotion subversive to the societal norms of the aristocratic society of the time. Nowadays one can visit the well-preserved Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto, to relive scenes from over a thousand years ago.
